To Harry’s Family:

I worked with Harry at Osage Professional Development and knew him for many years while at LAUSD.

Many of my family members as well as myself have a treasured nameplate or wooden clown bank that Harry affectionately made for friends. He was a beautiful, loving person.

I have often thought about him after he retired and was saddened to read on the Obituary page of the L.A. Times today of his passing. My prayers are with you.

I knew Harry in the late 1960s when I was a high school and college student. He was the head of Youth Services, I think, around 1970. I can picture him now -- white shirt, black horn rimmed glasses with a band that kept them on his neck.

His passing brings up names and faces that I have not thought about in years – Tony Cockins, Walt Young, Ed Sparrow, and many others. We worked hard and had fun. Back then, Harry blazed the way for other Asian-Americans to become leaders in the LAUSD which now seems to be foregone conclusion today. Harry had a nickname for me – we’ll keep that one between us. Thanks for being a part of my life.

Please give warmest thoughts to the Nishisaka Family. I was a student at Brockton Avenue Elementary School while Mr. Nishisaka was the Principal. Mr. Nishisaka’s son, Vince, was also a friend of mine while I was in high school. Please know that I just attended a 90th Anniversary at Brockton Avenue and Mr. Nishisaka was dearly missed. My elementary school years were some of the best times in my life and I thank Mr. Nishisaka as being part of that wonderful experience.
